Following their meeting on the occasion of the exhibition Silence, a monograph by Hessie presented at La BF15 in Lyon in April 2016 at the invitation of Perrine Lacroix, artist and curator, the two women felt the desire to extend their collaboration and to transform their complicity into a film. The idea is not to produce a documentary, but to realize a poetic work, an intimate portrait of Hessie within her universe.
The shooting takes place naturally in the Moulin d'Hérouval in Normandy, transformed from 1962 into a workshop house by Hessie and her husband, the painter Dado. The camera walks in this place of life and creation, a unique, family and artistic place where children, artists, critics, curators and collectors meet. As the camera goes through these spaces, Hessie confides in her practice, talks about her work, reveals her singular history and her memories, those of an unusual woman.
A rare and precious testimony, this film directed by Perrine Lacroix is conceived in the form of a diptych, in order to unite in one vision the word and the world of Hessie, the field and the reverse of its universe.
SILENCE is presented for the first time at the Abattoirs de Toulouse on the occasion of the Hessie retrospective, Survival Art, thus enabling viewers to explore the mystery of an artist as enigmatic as it is fascinating.
