El pelele

2005

El pelele (The Puppet) echoes a painting realized by Francisco de Goya in 1792, in which four young girls play and maltreat a puppet. El pelele is a popular game that consists in throwing in the air a rog doll representing the king. Coming from carnival traditions, visible with the use of the mak and derision, the artist uses this scene as an allegory of women's condition and their relationship with the dominant gender's decisions that they have to endure.

Here, in Perrine Lacroix's video, children play this game as if denouncing any form of manipulative domination.
